Wie es das Schicksal und vor allem die hoch patriotische Verwandtschaft väterlicherseits jedoch wollte, wurde Project American (Grand-)Daughter erfolgreich in Nashville, Tennessee zum Abschluss gebracht. Recht bald nach ihrer Geburt am 7. Mai 1990, begleite die heute 30-jährige ihre Eltern quer durch die Weltgeschichte, wie es als Tochter eines Diplomatic Security Service Officers nun einmal nicht ungewöhnlich ist - Patriotische Pflicht vor "Ich will nicht von meinen Freunden weg, Dad!"-Genörgel, pflegte ihr Vater zu sagen. Zu ihrer Mutter, zu ihrem Bruder Ellis, zu Mae.
In Nairobi verstummte all dieser familiäre Widerspruch nach einem Anschlag auf die amerikanische Botschaft für immer. Mae kehrte als Halbwaise in die USA zurück und ihr Vater bewies einmal mehr, dass Familie sich dem Job unterzuordnen hatte - auch wenn sie es aus heutiger Sicht als seine Art der Trauerarbeit verstehen kann, war für das traumatisierte Kind von damals eine Unterbringung bei ihren Großeltern - der General und Drillsergeant Oma, wie sie sie noch heute nennt - auf einer Army Base eine fatale Entscheidung. Was ihre Großmutter als sturen und schwierigen Charakter ihrer Enkeltochter bezeichnete, wurde letztlich als Selektiver Mutismus diagnostiziert.
Heute kann Emilia im Stillen darüber Schmunzeln, dass ausgerechnet eine ausgebildete Opernsängerin, mit dem Stimmvolumen ein vollbesetztes Orchester übertönen zu können, lange Jahre nicht oder nur mit wenigen Leuten sprechen konnte. Das entschleunigte Leben auf der Farm ihrer Großeltern mütterlicherseits im Herzen von Tennessee und vor allem das gemeinsame Musizieren mit ihrem Onkel, haben ihr den Weg zurück zu ihrer Stimme geebnet, die sie heute nicht müde wird für andere zu erheben - sei es auf der Bühne der Lyric Opera of Chicago, als Vocal-Coach für sozial benachteiligte Kinder oder auf Protestkundgebungen aller Art. Nicht nur in ihrem Berufsleben hat sich Chicago als Lebensmittelpunkt für Mae erwiesen, denn auch häuslich hat sie sich vor drei Jahren einen Traum verwirklicht und ein Haus in Kenwood, 4355 S Lake Park Ave gekauft, um daraus eine Künstler-WG zu errichten.
